Krige Schabort is gearing up for his ultimate paratriathlon at his sixth and final Paralympics in Rio. WIRED takes a look at the high tech bike that’s going to get him over the finish line.
Krige is a military veteran from the South African Engeneering Corps, and lost both his legs in a war in Angola. The Rio Paralympics will mark his sixth Games, representing two different countries and competing in two different sports.
After learning that Schabort had been a lifelong athlete, enjoying basketball and swimming, his occupational therapist introduced him to wheelchair racing.After overcoming “the only tough part,” actually acquiring a high-priced racing chair, Schabort participated in five Paralympic Games as a marathoner.
Schabort started his athletic career off as a South African Paralympian in 1992, where he won bronze medal in the marathon. He continued his marathon success in 1996, 2000 where he finished second, 2004 and 2012.
